On Saturday, March 9, 2024, the South Middle Science Olympiad Team won the Nassau County tournament, taking home first place! Amidst fierce competition from the top schools in Nassau County and extraordinary displays of knowledge and skill, 45 exceptional young minds have emerged victorious, earning accolades and reaffirming their commitment to excellence in the field of science, technology and engineering.
The Science Olympiad Tournament held at Kellenberg High School, brought together 40 teams of budding scientists, engineers, and innovators from schools across Nassau County. These students showcased their knowledge and skills in various scientific disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, forensics and earth science, through a series of rigorous challenges and hands-on experiments such as Roller Coaster, Towers, Anatomy and Physiology, Experimental Design, Crime Busters and Dynamic Planet, plus 17 other events.
After months of preparation, collaboration and dedication, the SMS teams have distinguished themselves as the champions of Nassau County. Team A took first for the third time in the past 4 years. Team B finished in fourth place, and Team C finished in 10th place out of 40 teams in the tournament.
These remarkable achievements not only highlight the exceptional talent and hard work of the SMS students but also underscore the importance of fostering scientific curiosity and exploration among the youth.

Science Olympiad serves as a platform for nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers, providing them with opportunities to hone their skills, collaborate with peers, and push the boundaries of scientific knowledge.
As the winners celebrate their achievements, they look forward to representing Great Neck in the upcoming state Science Olympiad competition in Syracuse NY, where they will continue to inspire and impress with their scientific prowess.
