Philosophy

The World Language Department strives to equip our South Middle School students with 21st century skills aimed to enhance their cultural fluency and acquire language skills that foster global citizenship.

The South Middle School World Language philosophy expands beyond the classroom to teach the whole student, promoting the integration of interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills through relevant and authentic learning. Students are immersed in language and culture through functional settings in order to acquire cultural insight and gain the ability to communicate with people from other cultures, while developing individual paths to access bodies of knowledge and greater awareness of themselves, and the communities around them.

Our philosophy of World Language education is supported by the Standards for Foreign Language Learning established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). ACTFL states that “Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are equipped linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad.”
