Highlighting our June Artists of the Month!

We are thrilled to celebrate three exceptional students whose creative achievements are now showcased in the main lobby.

  • 6th Grade – Iffet Toz: Produced a realistic self-portrait featuring a striking background of yellow, black, and gold prints.

  • 7th Grade – Angela Zhang: Developed an inventive cardboard relief landscape that utilizes the material in unique ways.

  • 8th Grade – Salina Chen: Designed a remarkable surrealist-inspired portrait exhibiting superior drawing skills.

Don't miss the chance to admire these magnificent artworks displayed in the lobby all through June!

 

No Place for Hate Cynthia Marks Award

Eighth grader Bella Yang was presented with the 2025-2026 Cynthia Marks Student Legacy Award for Middle School by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) New York/New Jersey. This prestigious honor is awarded to one student at the elementary, middle, and high school levels who demonstrates extraordinary leadership in advancing their school’s No Place for Hate initiative.

Bella is an active member of our Adolescent Advocates program and has consistently gone above and beyond to promote respect and inclusivity within our school community. Her leadership and commitment truly embody what it means to be an upstander and a role model.

Nassau All-County Art Exhibition

Nine talented South Middle School artists had their original works displayed at the 22nd annual Nassau All-County Art Exhibition on March 1, 2026, an event sponsored by the Nassau County Art Administrators Association.

To further celebrate their creativity and artistic achievement, this artwork, along with pieces representing all grade levels from elementary through high school, will be featured in a special exhibit at the Great Neck Library Main Branch, located at 159 Bayview Avenue.

The exhibit will be open to the public in the Lower-Level Art Gallery during library hours from April 1 through April 24. The public is also invited to attend an art reception on Wednesday, April 15, from 6:30–7:30 p.m.

Spaghetti Dinner, 2026

 This year's Spaghetti Dinner was once again a smashing success, and it truly took a village to make it happen. We served more than 500 guests and raised critical funds for our field trip scholarship program. Just as importantly, the spirit and sense of community in the room were unmistakable.

This past Thursday, 3/12, was South Middle's very first Unity Day.  The whole day came together in spectacular fashion.  Students and staff alike had a wonderful day.

Science Bowl Champions

For the second consecutive year, a team from South Middle School earned first place overall at the Regional Middle School Science Bowl and will advance to the National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. this April.

The regional event at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Jan. 29 featured middle school teams from across Long Island and New York City. South Middle was represented by two teams in this fast-paced question-and-answer competition that covers a range of science disciplines, including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.

South Middle Cultural Heritage Celebration

Our annual Cultural Heritage Celebration was held last Thursday, 1/22.  An incredible time was had by all.

Winter Concert Art Show

The South Middle Winter Art Show is currently on display in the school’s main lobby. The exhibit showcases a wonderful collection of drawings, paintings, and prints created by our talented students in grades 6–8. The artwork will remain on display in the main lobby for the remainder of the week—be sure to stop by and celebrate our students’ creativity!

Great Neck Student Among Top 300 Junior Innovators in Nation’s Premier STEM Competition

The Society for Science has announced Great Neck student Jada Lin (now a 9th grader) among the Top 300 Junior Innovators in the 2025 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (Thermo Fisher JIC)—the nation’s premier science, technology, engineeringand math (STEM) competition for middle school students.

No Place for Hate

We’re proud to announce that South Middle School has once again been officially designated as a No Place for Hate School with Gold Star distinction for the 2024–2025 school year!

This recognition reflects our school-wide commitment to building a more inclusive, respectful, and kind community for all students and staff. Thank you to our incredible students, especially our Adolescent Advocates, who continue to support this important work and help us stand up against hate in all its forms.

South Middle School is proud to announce its extraordinary success at this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF), where SMS students earned five First Place Awards out of only eight given. This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication, ingenuity, and scientific excellence demonstrated by our young researchers and their incredible teachers/mentors, Mr. Brian Pernice, Mrs. Kathryn Whidden, and Mrs. Elizabeth Ege.

The "Teach Peace" mural emerged from a collaborative effort between the Art Club and the No Place for Hate initiative. Students contributed their handprints to create the vibrant background, while the Art Club members skillfully painted the "Teach Peace" imagery on top.
